Removing the Free Shipping Option from All Products: A Cozy How-To Adventure

Have you ever had one of those days where you just plopped onto the couch, looked at your latest brainchild of an online store, and thought, “Sure, world domination can wait another day, but that pesky free shipping thing must go”? Well, join the club, friend! A couple of weeks ago, my business partner Terry and I found ourselves in that exact predicament - our well-meaning free shipping message plastered across our cart dashboard like gaudy graffiti, confusing our beloved customers just trying to buy quirky collectible mugs. We needed a change, and by George, we were going to make it happen with as little hair-pulling as possible.

The Beginning: Just a Bit of Investigation

Terry raised an eyebrow, holding a steaming cup of coffee in one hand, the other poised ready to tackle our online beast. We started by diving into our Shopify store settings with a fervor previously reserved for pie-eating contests. “Okay,” Terry said, “let’s find where this miraculous message gets its life essence.” Our mission became clear: we had to locate the source of this promotional Polynesian peril and revert it back to the peaceful waters of non-free-shipping bliss.

  1. Login to Shopify: First things first, if you haven’t already, log into your Shopify admin. It’s much like entering the secret kingdom through a magnificent wooden door - alright, maybe a metaphorical wooden door, but still quite exciting in its own way!

  2. Navigate to Settings: Once past that, direct your cursor toward the left-hand panel, and click on ‘Settings’. My heart always does a little skip here—not unlike how it does when I find a potato chip shaped like a heart.

  3. Shipping and Delivery Exploration: Next, steer your eager mouse pointer to ‘Shipping and Delivery’. This section is where the real fun starts. Prepare yourself for the journey because changes coming from banners up in here can make you feel like you’re all grown-up and stuff.

Down the Technical Rabbit Hole: Unpacking the Code

We’d now reached the point where theories clashed with technological reality. The time had come to brave the waters of code! A place where semi-colons and curly braces roamed free and rules were made to be… not broken, actually.

  1. Access Your Theme’s Code: Head over to Online Store > Themes, and find your active theme. Then, click on ‘Actions’ followed by ‘Edit Code’. Ah, the code editor, truly a wonderland of numbers and letters - as captivating as hieroglyphics yet ten times more terrifying to the unprepared.

  2. Find the Right File: The trick here is in finding the offending snippet. Generally, you'll start by looking in your theme’s snippets directory or cart.liquid files. Specifically, files named something along the lines of shipping or announcement might hide your free shipping line like a chameleon in a leafy tree.

  3. Removing Announcement Codes: If you manage to find the code responsible for the free shipping message, it might look a bit like this:

    {% if cart.total_price >= 340 %}
        <div class="free-shipping-message">
            Spend $340 or more and get free shipping!
        </div>
    {% endif %}

    You’ve got two options here, both down-and-dirty simple: either remove this entire block or, if we’re likely to need it later, change it to:

    {% comment %}
    {% if cart.total_price >= 340 %}
        <div class="free-shipping-message">
            Spend $340 or more and get free shipping!
        </div>
    {% endif %}
    {% endcomment %}

    Using Liquid's commenting means you can always re-enable the code later, akin to safely tucking away your favorite winter scarf in the attic till Jack Frost makes his frosty appearance.

The Aftermath: Victory and Cocoa

Once everything was wrapped up neatly, with not a free shipping message in sight, we celebrated like any victorious entrepreneurs—by making comforting mugs of hot cocoa, marshmallows proudly frothing at the top. After all, nothing marks the end of a valiant cyber campaign quite like marshmallow-laden cocoa. Now our cart was neat, focused, and free of unexpected surprises.

Our little adventure turned out to be less of a tech nightmare and more of a simple yet empowering endeavor. So, from Terry, myself, and possibly unexpected buddy Coder (our cat, the real mastermind), happy coding and happy selling! May your carts be ever user-friendly and your sales bountiful.
