How to create a best seller collection on Shopify

Creating a best seller collection

  1. Log In: Access your Shopify admin panel.

  2. Collections: Go to Products > Collections.

  3. New Collection: Click on Create collection.

  4. Name Your Collection: Enter a title like "Bestsellers".

    • Set conditions based on sales data, such as "Number of times sold" or "Order by best-selling".
  6. Inventory and Pricing: Adjust these settings to suit the collection.

  7. Collection Page Design: Make sure it highlights the popularity of the items.

  8. Promotion: Feature the collection prominently on your homepage and in marketing campaigns.

Remember, to have a bestseller collection, you need to have sales data. Shopify can automatically populate this collection based on your store’s sales performance if you set the correct conditions. Keep monitoring and updating the collection as needed based on sales trends and inventory.

How to remove a product from a collection on Shopify

Looking to remove a product from a collection on Shopify?
No problem, we've got you covered below.

After that, if you're interested, we've also included a few of the principles we've used to create high-converting collection pages with the brands we work with.

Removing a product from a collection

For a manual collection

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.
  2. Click the name of the collection you want to edit
  3. In the "products" widget, click the "x" next to the name of the product you want to remove from the collection
  4. Hit "Save"

The product will be removed from the collection. But note: it will not be removed from all of Shopify.

For an automated collection

When you have an automated collection, you'll need to adjust the collection criteria to exclude the product you want to remove. The easiest way to accomplish this is to exclude the product based on the Product Title.

  1. From you Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.
  2. Click the name of the collection you want to edit.
  3. In the Conditions widget, select "Add another condition"
  4. In the new condition, specify "Product Title" and "is not equal to"
  5. Enter the product title in the text box
  6. Hit "Save"

This will exclude the product from the collection.

Our best practices for selecting products for a collection

Ensure all the products you select fit the collection's theme

No one likes a collection full of random products that don't relate to one another.

Include at least 20 to 40 products

Small collections work when you have a store that doesn't sell a ton of merchandise. But if you have hundreds of products on your store, make sure you're including at least 20-40 products within each collection. Having this level of product density in the collection gives users the ability to browse your selection to find something they might be interested in buying.

Include a variety of price points

Using all high price points or all low price points in a collection can send the wrong message - you either look like a luxury brand or a discount retailer. Include a variety of price points to meet the varying needs of your shoppers.

Changing the Featured Collection on Shopify

To update the featured collection on your Shopify homepage:

  1. Log Into Shopify Admin:

    • Sign in to your Shopify admin.
  2. Customize Theme:

    • Go to Online Store > Themes.
    • Click Customize on your current theme.
  3. Select Featured Collection Section:

    • On the theme editor, click on the 'Featured Collection' section. This may be named differently like 'Home page collection'.
  4. Change the Collection:

    • Click the section to edit and select a different collection from the list of collections available.
  5. Save Your Changes:

    • Click Save at the top right corner.

Your homepage will now display the newly selected featured collection.

Changing the Order of Collections on Shopify

To adjust the sequence of collections as they display on your Shopify storefront, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Admin Panel: Sign in to your Shopify admin.

  2. Navigate to Navigation: Go to Online Store > Navigation.

  3. Select Your Menu: Click on the name of the menu where your collections are listed.

  4. Reorder Collections:

    • Use the drag and drop feature to rearrange the collections in your preferred order.
    • Alternatively, click the Sort button for options like alphabetical order.
  5. Save Menu: Click Save Menu to apply the changes.

The changes will reflect on your storefront based on the menu you've adjusted.

Importing Collections in Shopify

Since Shopify doesn't natively support collection imports through the admin interface, you'll need to use the Shopify API or a third-party app. Here's a general approach:

  1. Shopify API:

    • Use the Shopify Admin API to create collections programmatically.
    • You'll need to write a script or use an app that can send POST requests to Shopify with your new collection details.
  2. Third-Party Apps:

    • Look for apps in the Shopify App Store that offer data import functionality, including collections.
    • Follow the app's instructions to upload your collection data, often through a CSV file.
  3. Manual Upload:

    • Alternatively, you can manually create collections and assign products to them in the Shopify admin.

Note: Interacting with the Shopify API or using third-party apps typically requires a certain level of technical expertise.

Adding Products to a Collection in Shopify

To add products to a collection in Shopify, you can follow these steps:

  1. Log into Shopify Admin:

    • Access your Shopify admin panel by logging in.
  2. Navigate to Collections:

    • Click on Products in the left-hand sidebar, then select Collections.
  3. Choose a Collection:

  4. Add Products:

    • For a manual collection: Click on Add products and select the products you wish to add.
    • For an automated collection: Ensure that the products you want to add meet the conditions of the collection. They will be added automatically based on the rules you’ve set.
  5. Save Your Changes:

    • Click Save to confirm the addition of products to your collection.

Now, your selected products will be part of the collection you chose.

Want to be a full-priced store on Shopify? We all do. But guess what? Even at the top luxury brands, sale pages drive a significant portion of revenue. 2. Navigate to Collections: Select Products > Collections from the sidebar.

    • Manage inventory and pricing to accurately reflect sale items.
    • Consider setting a date range for when items are on sale.

How to create a collection in Shopify

Creating collections in Shopify is straightforward (and easy to do). Learning why they're important and how to create high converting collections is a different beast.

In the documentation below, we'll show you exactly how to create a collection and how to navigate the initial choices you'll need to make. Then we'll give you links in the event you want to dive deep.

Creating a collection in the Shopify UI

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Products > Collections.

  2. Click Create collection.

  3. Enter a title and description for the collection.

  4. In the Collection type section, click Manual or Automatic.

  5. Click Save.

  6. In the Products section, search for products or click Browse, and then add the products that you want to have in the collection.

  7. Set the sort order for how you want the products to be sorted in your store. For more information about sorting, see Change the sort order for the products in a collection.

  8. Optional: The Search engine listing preview section shows a preview of how the collection will be displayed in search results. If you want to edit this information, then click Edit website SEO. You can't change the URL and handle, because they are used to link the collection to your online store.

  9. In the Sales channels section, click Manage to select the sales channels where you want your collection to be available.

  10. In the Collection image section, click Add image to upload an image for the collection. For information about the sizes of images that you can use, see Image sizes.

  11. Click Save.

  12. Add a link to your collection in your online store navigation so that customers can find and view the collection.

Title and description

Creating a compelling collection title in Shopify should be straightforward and keyword-rich to ensure it's both catchy for customers and SEO-friendly. Generally, you'll be using short 1-3 word collection titles. Think about what your customers might be searching for and incorporate that into your title. For the description, provide clear and engaging information that highlights the unique selling points of the products within the collection. It should tell a story that connects with your customers' needs and desires, using language that resonates with your brand's voice.

Manual vs Automatic

Use a manual collection in Shopify when you want full control over which products are included. This is ideal for curated selections that don't change often, like a "Staff Picks" or a "Seasonal Favorites" collection. It's also useful for merchandise that requires careful selection, like a premium line or limited edition items.

On the flip side, opt for an automatic collection when you have a large inventory and want to save time by setting specific conditions to automatically include products. This is perfect for collections that are updated frequently, like "New Arrivals," or when products share common traits, such as items from the same brand or with the same tags. Automatic collections ensure that your collections stay up-to-date without the need for manual adjustments as your inventory changes.

Collection Images

For most brands, we actually advise to not use collection images. Here's why. Most customers are coming to collection pages to see products, and collection images generally get displayed at the top of the collection page. As a result, the actual product images get pushed down the page. You only have so much screen space "above the fold" (i.e. the first time a user has to scroll), and we think that space is better used for the products themselves rather than an image that tries to capture the feel of the collection. Not using images also has the added bonus of reducing your need for additional photography and graphic design every time you want to launch a new colleciton.

  5. Test the Feature:

Creating Sub-Collections on Shopify

Shopify doesn't support nested collections by default, but you can create a sub-collection structure through menus and manual linking. Here's how:

  1. Create Main Collections:

    • These are your broad categories. Set them up first.
  2. Create Sub-Collections:

    • These are your more specific categories, treated as regular collections in Shopify.

If the option to add a description is not available, it may require adding custom HTML or Liquid code in the theme files.
